Locals urge forest dept to adopt dying emus
Locals urge forest dept to adopt dying emus
A group of locals who had started emu farming in partnership has requested the Forest Department to adopt the 12 birds remaining with them because most of the birds they had bought have died. In a letter to the principal chief conservator of forests, Raipur residents Ravi Singh Negi and Ashok Vardhan Singh have said that inspite of their efforts, most of the 30 pairs of emu they had purchased with their partners from a South-India based businessmen have died and now they want the remaining 12 birds to be shelter the birds in some park so that the people can learn about them.
In a letter written to the chief secretary, the PFA Uttarakhand member secretary Gauri Maulekhi has pointed out that in September last year, she had informed the then Forest and Rural Development Commissioner about scam being orchestrated to dupe farmers and investors through fraudulent investment schemes. Such a scam in Tamil Nadu involving Rs 500 crore resulted in the culling of 17,000 emus by the Tamil Nadu Government in the past.
She then informed the office of the chief secretary in October last year about this scam after which the chief wildlife warden had been directed to conduct an inquiry into the matter because emu being considered a wild bird, if left without shelter, its responsibility falls on the chief wildlife warden. However, the chief wildlife warden has done little more than writing letters to the directors of Corbett and Rajaji national parks and the chief conservators of forests of Garhwal and Kumaon circles, complained Maulekhi.
"There are more than 20,000 emus in Uttarakhand at present and farmers and investors in the State are sustaining a heavy loss in emu farming. The birds dying in the emu farm at Nanurkheda in Dehradun are examples of the problems in emu farming which the department has continued to ignore inspite of being warned about it in the past. The forest department doesn’t have the resources or place for keeping even one pair of emus. The Government will have to decide where the thousands of emus will be sheltered once the farmers start abandoning the business of emu farming in Uttarakhand," she states in the letter to the chief secretary.
As there is no demand for the ill-tasting and leathery meat of the emu, its eggs and oil either in India or abroad, the chief secretary has been requested to prevent further breeding of emus in the State so that emus are not starved to death in farms which are not making any profit. He has been requested to order the closure of the emu hatchery at Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district.
